DONOR SELECTION

Central Florida Tissue Bank obtains tissue from cadaver donors whose legal next-of-kin has given consent for tissue donation.

Suitability of a donor for tissue donation is initially determined by review of the donor's medical and social history. Tissues are obtained from donors who are free from infections, malignant diseases and diseases of unknown etiology that may involve a transmissable agent.

In order to provide the safest and hightest quality products, extensive bacteriological studies of the blood and tissues are performed. In addition, donor's serum is screened using FDA licensed testing kits including but not limited to:

  • HIV-1-Ag
  • HIV -1/2 Ab
  • HTLV -I, II Ab
  • HBsAg
  • HBc-Ab
  • HCV Ab
  • RPR Syphilis
  • HCV NAT
  • ABO/Rh
  • An autopsy is performed on most cadaver donors.

All donor information is reviewed by the Tissue Bank's Medical Director, including serological and bacteriological testing, donor's medical and social history and processing quality control before a decision is made to release the tissue for transplantation.
